The Benefits of Mat Pilates: Why It’s Just as Good (If Not Better) Than Reformer Pilates
I’m often asked which is better - Mat Pilates or Reformer Pilates? And the answer is neither – they are different and both have many benefits. This post looks at why you shouldn’t overlook Mat Pilates.
There is no doubt about it that Reformer Pilates is having a moment – it’s become the latest trendy workout featured on Instagram, and often this is what people think about when they think of Pilates (as that is the only element of Pilates they have come across). With its sliding carriage, springs, and straps, the reformer looks impressive - and it’s easy to assume it offers a superior workout. But the truth is that mat Pilates, practiced with nothing more than your body, a mat, and sometimes small props, can be just as effective as reformer Pilates - if not better in certain ways.
1. Accessibility and Simplicity
One of the biggest advantages of mat Pilates is its accessibility. You don’t need expensive equipment or studio access - just a mat and some space. This makes it ideal for home workouts, travel, or anyone looking to build a consistent practice without barriers.
By stripping away the equipment, mat Pilates makes the method available to anyone, anywhere, at any time. That accessibility also means fewer excuses - there is nothing stopping you practicing mat Pilates at any time in any place!
2. Core Strength Like Nothing Else
Joseph Pilates originally designed mat work as the foundation of the Pilates method, and for good reason: it’s a powerhouse for core strength. Without springs and straps for support, your body does ALL the work, demanding greater engagement from the deep stabilising muscles of the core.
This translates to improved posture, spinal support, and functional strength that carries over into everyday activities and athletic performance.
He invented the Reformer later to help people who were bedridden and needed assistance to perform the mat exercises effectively.
3. Builds True Body Awareness
The reformer can guide you into correct alignment, but mat Pilates requires you to cultivate body awareness from the inside out. Without the support of the reformer, practicing mat Pilates quickly shows you where your weaknesses and imbalances are as you practice the exercises!
With mat, you learn to control your movements, stabilise your joints, and activate the right muscles without the external assistance of the equipment.
This heightened proprioception helps prevent injury, improves coordination, and makes you more mindful in all types of movement - from walking or running to lifting weights or simply sitting at your desk or sitting on the sofa.
4. Functional Strength and Flexibility
Mat Pilates emphasises moving your own body weight, which builds functional strength - strength you actually use in daily life. It also promotes mobility and flexibility through controlled stretching and lengthening of the muscles.
Because the exercises are performed in different positions - lying, sitting, kneeling, standing - you strengthen your body through multiple planes of motion, giving you a well-rounded workout.
5. Cost-Effective and Sustainable
Reformer classes can be expensive, often costing double or more of the price of a mat class. With mat Pilates, you get an equally challenging and effective workout without the financial strain. That makes it a more sustainable long-term option, especially for those who want to practice frequently.
6. The Ultimate Foundation
Even for reformer lovers, mat Pilates should never be overlooked. It provides the foundation for all Pilates work. If you can master stability, control, and precision on the mat, you’ll move with EVEN MORE efficiency and strength on the reformer.
Final Thoughts
Reformer Pilates is fantastic, but mat Pilates offers unmatched accessibility, affordability, and core-strengthening power. Many teachers (me included!) consider it the true test of strength and control, since there’s nothing between you and gravity.
Whether you’re new to Pilates or a seasoned pro, don’t underestimate the mat - it may just be the most effective (and liberating) version of the Pilates Method.
