what is Pilates?

Mat Pilates is a form of low-impact exercise performed on the floor using just a mat — no machines or equipment required.

Rooted in the original method developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century, it focuses on controlled, precise movements designed to strengthen the deep core muscles, improve posture, increase flexibility, and develop body awareness.

Each exercise emphasises breath, alignment, and the connection between mind and body, making it accessible to all fitness levels while remaining genuinely challenging.

Whether you're a complete beginner or a seasoned mover, Mat Pilates builds a strong, stable foundation that supports everything you do in daily life. They say that Pilates is the form of exercise that will make all your other movement better.

Why I fell in love with Pilates

I reached 40 in the best shape of my life - I’d been teaching hot yoga for a few years and was feeling great - doing fingertips press ups and I was both stronger and more flexible than I had ever been.

Then I was hit with a shoulder injury - and despite medical intervention with a steroid injection to reduce inflammation, all other forms of exercise still irritated my shoulder, so I turned to Pilates. Pilates has without a doubt helped me tremendously in regaining my strength and movement.

Other than walking, Pilates is the only form of exercise recommended to such a wide range of people - from teenagers to seniors, elite athletes, to people recovering from injury.

I have a lot of clients who have been recommended to practice Pilates by their Doctor/ Physiotherapist/ Chiropractor. Very often the Pilates exercises are actually recommended by Physiotherapists in their treatment plans.

What kind of Pilates do I teach?

I am a Level 3 Mat Pilates Instructor.

I trained in Classical Mat Pilates (the original 34 exercises) designed by Joseph Pilates. We do occasionally stick to the classical exercises, but the classes I teach are generally a more contemporary or modern style of Pilates. Our bodies have changed significantly in the last century due to our lifestyles, and modern movement science has increased vastly since then. I like to use modern small equipment such as a Pilates balls, resistance bands etc. These are amazing at providing some support when we need it to make an exercise easier, or to make the muscles have to work harder. The small equipment is always popular in classes as it provides some variety and keeps things fresh. Each class is slightly different - sometimes it will be all mat based, but other times we may do more standing work. Feedback from my clients is that they like this variety.
